Sibbertoft Camping Weekend 20-21 May 2023

Eight ‘Happy Campers’ cycled to Brook Meadow campsite at Sibbertoft (near Market Harborough) on Saturday 20 May: Ian Richardson, Julian Tatam, Phil Gee, Jon Lyall, Chris Farrow, Alistair Northend, Ian Todd, joined by Malc Jacklin later in the evening after he had ridden a nearby audax event.

We followed a hilly 54-mile route out via Barrowden and Stoke Dry with a coffee stop at Sweet Hedges farm café near Stockerston, then on via Goadby and the Langtons for another stop by the Grand Union canal at Foxton Locks, after a brief ride along the canal towpath.

Great countryside in this area with a couple of highlights when we were stopped by a herd of cows and then had to wait whilst the over was finished at Gumley Cricket Club, because the pitch spills out over the hillside and over the road! A case of ‘Cricket stopped Cycling’ rather than ‘Rain stopped Play’!

We had a good meal at the Red Lion pub in Sibbertoft and had breakfast at the local Gliding Club café about a mile along from the campsite, before setting off on our 53-mile return route which joined the club run (Ian Waddilove and Charlie Joseland) at the Rockingham Village Stores café.

Harry Laws

HARRY LAWS
Born 1911, Harold Laws was a former resident of Peterborough who was killed while fighting with the International Brigade in Spain when the insurgents recaptured Teruel from the Government forces on 17 February 1938.
Originally from Southampton, Harold came to Peterborough from Worcester in 1935 at the age of 25 to work as a turner (lathe operator) at the city’s Baker Perkins engineering works. He held strong political views and after a short time in the Labour Party he joined the Communists with whom he had been associated in Southampton.
Being a keen cyclist, Harry joined the Clarion as soon as he moved to Peterborough, taking part in club runs and sometimes going on touring excursions with two or three friends.
In 1936 he left Peterborough for Stratford, London, and then worked in Birmingham before leaving to join the International Brigade in October 1937 to fight against General Franco’s Fascist forces in the Spanish Civil War.
Whilst in Peterborough he lodged with a Mrs Garner of Rock Road and was great friends with the family of Mrs Barber on the same street. He wrote several letters to Mrs Barber, one sent from hospital in Albcate, Plaza del Altazona, after being wounded in the arm at Teruel in December 1937. He wrote, “I only fired five shots, and I don’t think I hit anything, but Franco’s men got me.”
Another letter spoke of the amazing countryside, “We appear to be bang up against the sky, thousands of feet above sea level. Mountain tops are quite close, only two or three hundred feet away, usually immersed in clouds.”

Clarion "100 Up" Ride

Eight Fenland riders took part in the “100 Up” ride on Sunday 28 August 2022. A lovely sunny day started with a 42 mile ride out to Hickling Basin, north of Melton Mowbray, where we met up with riders from Tuxford Clarion (along with one brave representative from Nottingham!)

The Tuxford Clarion members proved to be entertaining company in the cafés and on the road. We found ourselves comparing notes on group rides and the intricacies of club organisation, among other things. Tuxford Chair, Ian Clarke, took charge of proceedings for the joint ride section of the day. Mr Clarke divided the riders into B and C groups (clearly thinking nobody deserved the A rating). Ian, Rich and Phil joined the B group for a very fast (and hilly) 30 mile ride to the second café stop near Belton House. The C group followed on at a more civilised pace and arrived 19 minutes later. Both of the day’s cafés, the Old Wharf tea rooms in Hickling and the Syston Park Farm shop, were excellent.

A Tribute to Richard Daniells

Members, especially those who ride open time trials, will be sad to hear of the untimely death of Richard Daniells.

Richard was cycling home to Rothwell from a CTC meet in Desborough on Tuesday and was in collision with a car on the road between Glendon and Rothwell. He was taken to Coventry Infirmary where he died later that day from his injuries.

Richard was the lynchpin of everything timetrialling in CTT South East Midlands District. He was chairman and treasurer of South East Midlands District and fulfilled the same roles for Northampton and District Cycling Association. 2020 marked his 50 years as N&DCA treasurer. He was timekeeper for most open events in South East Midlands.

He organised events locally and nationally. In 2009 he was awarded a Badge of Honour by Cycling Time Trials and he was a member of the CTT National Appeals Committee.

He will be hugely missed.

Dave Birch
(CTT South East Midland District Secretary)

[Richard's funeral was held at the Edgar Newman Chapel, Kettering Crematorium, on Tuesday 12th July. Richard's wife requested that his cycling friends should wear their cycling kit for the ceremony as a fitting tribute to Richard.]
